When the price for a one-ounce First-Class stamp increased to 42 cents on May 12, 2008, prices for other mailing services, such as Presort First Class Mail, Standard Mail, Periodicals, Package Services (including single-piece Parcel Post), and Special Services also changed. The average increase by class of mail was at or below the rate of inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index.

“The Postal Service developed the Forever Stamp for consumers to ease the transition during price changes,” said Postmaster General John Potter. The stamps sold for 41 cents until May 12, and now cost 42 cents. But when the price of stamps increases again, most likely May 2009, the Forever Stamps bought at 41 or 42 cents will continue to be accepted for single piece letter mail weighing up to 1 ounce. Consistent with a new law*, prices for mailing services will be adjusted annually each May. The Postal Service plans to provide 90 days’ notice before the price changes each year.

Presort First Class Mail rates also changed – up to 39.4 cents for letters up to 1 ounce – provided the letters qualify for presort discount rates. Other price changes involve the shape of the mail piece as well as size and weight.
